I am an Idiot

I've been trying really hard not to do too much complaining about the heat, to make up for all the bitching I did about the cold during the winter. However, it's been ridiculously hot for a ridiculously long time, and I'm sick of it. Especially considering that all of my windows face west, which I think I've mentioned before.

However, this is not strictly true - there's also a window in the kitchen, which faces north (the window that is; I'm not sure you can say that a room faces any particular direction - can you?). It's above my eye level (what isn't?) and there's a lace curtain covering the top half of it, so I've never looked at it that closely. Until two days ago, when I discovered that it opens. (This is the part where I'm an idiot. I've lived in this apartment for 2 1/2 years.)

Say hello to the wonders of a cross breeze! My evenings are much more pleasant now. Even the afternoons are almost tolerable. (Oh crap, now I have that stupid Air Supply song in my head, "Even the nights are better...")

It's the Little Differences

At the risk of sounding like Vincent Vega, there are a couple of things I've noticed lately, things that made me think, "Hmmm, that probably wouldn't happen in the US." Since I rarely even notice the differences between Poland and the US anymore, I thought I'd share these.

The first, sadly, was while I was standing in line at McDonald's. I generally avoid it, but every so often I get a craving for a McRoyal (yes, they really do call it that - you know, the metric system). So there I was, perusing the menu, and I notice a new item - deep fried broccoli with cream sauce. Please tell me they're not offering this worldwide. I don't know why, but I'm really hoping it's one of those only-in-Europe things.

And the second item, offered up for your consideration: I went to see the new Pirates movie tonight - which I LOVED - and we were a little late, which was ok because we figured we'd just miss the 15 minutes of ads that play before the previews. But no, what we actually missed was the first half of the lingerie fashion show. Yes, you read that correctly, but I'll wait while you read it again...

OK, ready to continue? Half a dozen half-naked women stalking across the stage while photos of other half-naked women were shown on the screen. I'm still trying to figure out the relevance to the Pirates movie, or anything else for that matter, other than the fact that it was really hot out today, so maybe they were just trying to cool down by wearing less clothing? Again, I sincerely hope this isn't happening in cinemas all over the globe.

So those are the little differences that caught my attention recently. Now please excuse me while I go back to melting in the heat (it's midnight & it's still 25 degrees).

We're Having a Heat Wave

aka No, I'm Not Done Yet!!!

The quest for the end of the thesis continues, in the midst of 30+ degree weather. (That's around 90 for those of you who use farenheit.) My windows all face west. I haven't opened my window blinds in a while.

In the direction of good news, I have made considerable progress. Two chapters are done, a third is mostly done, and the fourth is half done. I think the end is in sight.

I had an opportunity to mark the 4th of July yesterday with 2 other Americans, a Brit, an Irish guy and 3 Poles. We sang a couple of patriotic songs, the men grilled burgers, it was almost like a real US fourth. I have to admit, I enjoyed it, despite once again being reminded of my odd status here - all the other women were Polish, all the other ex-pats were male. Which group do I join?

As usual (no surprise to those who know me well), neither - I just stayed on the fringes of both. I really need to a) improve my Polish, b) find more female ex-pats, or c) both. What was the middle thing?

OK, enough avoidance, back to the thesis that won't end.
